A qualifying offer is a 1 year offer worth the average of the top 125 salaries from the prior year that you can make to an impending free agent at the end of his contract. If you offer a player a qualifying offer and another team outbids you and wins him in free agency, that team will surrender it’s highest remaining pick, outside of a top 10 pick, which are protected, in the upcoming First-Year Player Draft. The team who made the qualifying offer will receive a 1st round compensation pick at the end of the first round. What makes a Qualified Free Agent?: In order to be eligible to receive a Qualifying Offer, a player must - Be a pending free agent with 6 or more years of Major League service who was
- With the same Club (without interruption, either at the Major or Minor League level) since Opening Day of the just-completed season.
- A pending free agent who was acquired via trade during the previous campaign is not eligible.
- 2015 Qualifying Offer value = $14,934,494
- 2016 Qualifying Offer value = $14,786,630
