Contracts can be back loaded or front loaded, which is explained below.
When signing a player to a contract, you may backload or frontload the contracts, but can not exceed the 20% limit. What this means is that if a player was won for $25,000,000 and given a 5 year contract ($5,000,000 AAS), their salary can not be more than $6,000,000 and not less than $4,000,000 for any given year. Back/Frontloading is limited to 10% on any contract over $20M AAV.
Example, I win player A in Free Agency bidding at $25,000,000 ($5,000,000 AAS).
I can set up his contract like this:
2015: $6,000,000
2016: $5,500,000
2017: $5,000,000
2018: $4,500,000
2019: $4,000,000
