Pirates put a claim for all of them

? I don't think you have 100M+ in cap.

Don't need cap to put in a waiver claim, need it to make a trade

At least shouldn't need to if the purpose of the waiver is to trade and not putting to the minors

If he releases all of them to you, it would put you way over the cap.

He isn't releasing anybody, he is trading them

Plus he can't release his whole team

Okay, clearly we need a better system for next year. For now, I don't know. Kinda defeats the purpose of a trade deadline.

Exactly, why IMO waiver trades shouldn't be allowed

Post by Former Texas Rangers GM on Aug 4, 2015 14:12:00 GMT
Since there isn't one yet, I'm just gonna set the deadline for Friday and I guess anyone can claim anyone until then.

Everybody could just put their whole team on waivers like Padres is doing and eventually totally circumvent the trade deadline. Personally don't like that at all

I meant to put in the rules that you have to have the available cap to claim a player, but I must have forgotten because I can't seem to find it now.

You did. It's under waiver rules, last paragraph.

Okay. I'm on my phone, hard to read. Rule stands then.

There needs to be a clear distinction then on waivers to send someone to the minors or release and waivers to trade.
I can see requiring someone to have cap for a player who could be released but if you clearly state you are putting a player on waivers to trade esp your whole team you aren't releasing all of them.

Also like I brought up when I had the Sanchez waiver claim, it's not fair to the claiming team to create cap space in case they get the player when they might not at all and them they traded players they didn't need to

There is no such thing as trade waivers. A team has to have the option to release the player if someone claims them, otherwise teams would claim everyone. I made the exception on Sanchez because you had a plan to create the cap. That was 1 player, not an entire team.

It's supposed to be difficult to make waiver trades, if you wanted to trade for a player you don't have cap for, it needs to be done before the deadline.

Didn't say there was a such thing as trade waivers, saying there needs to be because otherwise high salary guys no one has cap for can easily be traded for each other after they clear waivers

The problem here is you are trying to use real life waiver rules when we are playing with totally different cap rules then in real life.
We have a hard cap where in real life they don't. Any team can if they want pay the salary of any player they win on waivers that is released to them which prevents a real team waiving their whole roster

That's a valid point. In that case, only players won in a claim may be traded this year. Players who go unclaimed can be sent to the minors, but not traded. Well try to come up with a better solution in the offseason for future years.

So Texas under the current rules if we wanted to swap Felix Hernandez for Madison Bumgarner in a trade no one else could stop us from doing it now and thusly making the trade deadline null and a joke. Because no one has the cap to make a waiver claim on either of them.

Yes, I understand your point, see above post.

Ok that's a good solution for now in my opinion

Since "trade" waivers are just normal waivers, SD just sent his entire roster to the minors, and has nobody left to play tonight.

Well, technically he doesn't have to send them down until they clear and then he can call them right back up. A 10 day period between sending someone down and calling them back up is another thing I plan to add in the offseason.

No, he can't claim the entire team, he has room for some of them, but will have to specify which ones he wants to claim:
